Real estate agents Carla and Gladys Spizzirri have seen quite a few homes throughout their careers, so when they got a call about 148 Jane Street, they did not expect much. From the outside, the home did not really look special. The elderly lady that owned it, Joyce, got in touch with them to ask for her old house to be evaluated. Soon enough, the pair would be quite amazed by what they saw inside!
A Regular Home
This story proves that the old adage “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is definitely true. Looking at this West Toronto home from the outside, you would think it is not very different from other regular homes, but people found out there was actually more to the property when it was put up for sale. It has a secret that its 96-year-old owner has been hiding for over seven decades! Before calling in a house flipper, you should take a look inside first and you will surely be amazed by the beauty that is concealed by its rough exterior.
Looking To Sell
Not a lot of people had entered the house and the only known information about it was that for a really long time, the same people lived in it. The house remained a complete mystery. One day, Carla and Gladys got a call about a home that the owner was considering selling. The real estate duo immediately thought they needed to see the property first.
Just A Regular Day
For the sisters, the day started like any other, with everybody going about their usual routine in the office. Gladys and Carla Spizzirri owned the agency but the sisters didn’t always work together, but this changed when they realized how great they were as a team. They both brought something to the table – one looked up listings to sell while the other spoke to potential customers skillfully. Their teamwork is efficient and effective, so there’s no reason for changing a dynamic duo.
Gladys and Carla have years of experience, and this has made them knowledgeable about the workings of the business. They are great at their jobs and ready to tackle anything. They didn’t get many surprises anymore since they have been in the business for a long time. However, a surprise moment arises occasionally and this was one of those days.
The Phone Rings
Gladys and Carla had no idea that a simple phone call would change their lives. When the phone rang, they answered it without expecting anything big. However, it appears that even professional realtors like them still get shocked!
A Call From A Stranger
The phone at the Spizzirri’s’ office is always ringing, so they answered the call, as usual. However, things changed when they heard what the person calling had to say. The caller was Joyce, an elderly woman who was considering putting her home on the market.
Although it was Joyce who made the call, she still seemed hesitant. They could tell that she wasn’t too keen on the idea of selling her home. However, the sisters noticed that the elderly woman was a persistent person and they thought she would probably sell her home eventually. Then, Joyce revealed a secret to the sisters, and it changed their lives.
A Different Kind Of Emotion
Most people decide to sell their home to move forward and begin anew. They think that they have made the right decision and it shows when they contact realtors. However, this was not the case for Joyce. She didn’t seem thrilled at the idea of selling her house.
Real estate agents commonly have a sixth sense when talking to clients. Both Carla and Gladys had a feeling that the caller had a secret. It might be something that would make it pretty difficult to sell the house. The sisters knew from experience that even if the unpleasant things happened in the past, they could still negatively affect the sale of a house.
It was not the usual homeowner’s problem which Joyce tried to hide. There was no black mold or malfunctioning water heater. Her secret was bigger than that. Nevertheless, Carla and Gladys stuck to their guns. The pair were taking on the challenge.
No Way To Prepare
The challenge was selling the home that the elderly lady owned. Together, Gladys and Carla had the skills and experience needed to close a good deal for their clients. The duo was a powerful force that was set on dominating the real estate industry. Nevertheless, there wasn’t anything that could have prepared them for the secret that 148 Jane Street held. Apparently, within the walls of the seemingly standard house are a lot of surprising things.
Carla and Gladys had been in real estate for many years, so they were pretty sure that they had seen everything. They had been through all kinds of things, even situations that would make others give up. This helped them become capable of dealing with almost anything that they were confronted with. Prior to entering Joyce’s home, the pair were already imagining things they might find inside. They went through some crazy ideas, but none of them were even close to what they discovered in the home.
Hesitant And Weary
When they got the call, Carla was at the office. This wasn’t unusual considering the amount of success that they have attained throughout the years. The caller sounded quite hesitant and weary but she introduced herself and told them about her plan. Back then, Joyce was just another potential seller, so they reassured her that they would get her the best possible deal for her house. Normally, Carla does not expect to find a deluxe house or a mansion, and she actually prepared for the worst when she heard Joyce’s age.
The reason for Carla’s lowered expectations is the fact that old age often meant a neglected home, one that has messy rooms and would be harder to sell. Carla, however, thought that this might not be the case for Joyce since the 96-year-old sounded surprisingly lucid despite her age. The other tidbits, such as Joyce revealing having collected assorted items in her home, did not exactly thrill the experienced realtor but Carla began to feel some excitement and hope for the property nonetheless.
The sisters’ years in the real estate industry made them quite familiar with the Toronto area. They were experts at buying and selling properties located in the city’s well-known neighborhoods. There are times when they got lucky with a property, which only needed minimal work and pretty much sold itself. While they were not completely sure if this was true for Joyce’s house, it seemed unlikely.
Joyce did not appear too keen on putting her home on the market, so Gladys and Carla had to go to the house to find out for themselves why. When the elderly woman first got in touch with the realtors, Joyce told them something pretty surprising which could definitely affect the property’s sale.
A Living Legend
At the time, Joyce was 96 years old but she had good hearing and was completely lucid. Carla Spizzirri thought this was impressive since she has to speak loudly when talking to her own grandmother. It was a nice surprise to see Joyce had taken care of herself throughout the years, but the real surprise was waiting for the sisters inside the house. In fact, this surprise was more remarkable.
The two realtors felt more worried as the day of inspection got closer. Gladys and Carla were worried about the effort and time it would take to have the property cleaned if their worst fears were confirmed. The sisters hated visiting a hoarder’s home. It was possible Joyce had filled the house with junk she had collected in seven decades.
The house looked like a regular house from the outside, so the sisters were not ready for the unbelievable that was waiting for them inside. When they finally entered the home, they saw and understood what the elderly woman was talking about.
A Looming Disaster
By that time, Joyce had lived in her home for more than 70 years. However, she had not had anything done to it except having the kitchen remodeled. After hearing this, Gladys and Carla dreaded inspecting the property. They guessed that if the house was neglected, then it was probably also in bad shape!
When they noticed Joyce being hesitant, the sisters began getting seriously worried about the home’s interiors. Carla and Gladys have learned the hard way what a lack of willingness and an indecisive nature usually meant – the property was in awful condition. It was likely that the owner had a hoarding problem as well as the property was in a terrible state. If this was the case, overhaul and restoration were necessary to make the place more appealing to prospective buyers. However, they actually had not seen the home from the inside at that very moment.
Still So Hesitant
The duo was not sure about anything because they hadn’t checked the home’s interiors. They needed to consider all the factors like the cost of getting it fixed up, modernizing it and bringing it to acceptable conditions for living in. In addition, Joyce was still weary of selling her house.
Making Up Her Mind
Joyce was really hesitant during the first phone call, which naturally worried the girls, but the older woman did eventually say that despite having lived in her home for 72 years, she was set on selling it. We can only imagine what it must be like to leave a place that you have considered home for almost all your life and where you have created lots of memories. It is natural that Joyce was not sure of her decision, but Gladys and Carla still couldn’t help but worry about this.
Carla and Gladys needed to conduct an inspection of 148 Jane Street first before making a decision. The pair assumed that the house needed repairs before they could begin offering it to prospective buyers.
The pair of realtors set up a time when they would go to the house. Seeing the property for themselves would help them plan what needs fixing. They had no idea what they were going to see. They were totally in shock when they saw what the home had been hiding.
Not All Bad
Luckily for the realtors, the property’s location was better than expected. It is in the Old Mill area, which is considered an ideal location by many Torontonians. The prices of houses in the area had been going up for some time, so the duo was pretty confident they could get a good price for Joyce’s home.
Getting An Estimate
The real estate sisters have sold houses in this neighborhood, and the properties fetched incredible prices. However, at the time, they were not absolutely sure how much Joyce’s home was actually worth. The duo crunched some numbers and came up with an estimate – $968,000. The figure exceeded their expectations, which meant profit for their company.
The way Joyce talked made the sisters stop and think. They were wondering if it was because the elderly woman was devastated that she was leaving her home of over 70 years, or because of the realities of her secret. Leaving a home that you’re attached will certainly make you feel emotions, but if there was something else, then these girls would definitely be taking on quite a challenge.
Seven Decades’ Worth of Memories
The realtors found out that the house had been practically untouched for seven decades! The time they had spent in the business had taught them that this likely meant the home suffers from neglect. Seven decades without restoration and proper maintenance would definitely render a home uninhabitable. However, they were completely unaware that they were way off the mark. They had no idea what was waiting for them before they stepped inside the ordinary-looking home.
Messy And Uninhabitable?
Gladys and Carla started to imagine what the property could look like and they started to get worried. They thought that it was not possible for someone that old to be able to maintain a house in great condition for a very long time. Seventy years is not a joke and many people tend to hold on to junk. The sisters expected to find a house that needed serious renovation and remodeling, which requires a lot of money and effort. However, things changed when they entered the house.
A Change in Plans
The real estate duo had to handle another setback. Joyce seemed to have changed her mind. She began to struggle with letting go of her beloved home. Who could blame her? It can be difficult to come to terms with the idea of someone else living in a house where you have lived for decades and created a lot of memories. For us, this was pretty understandable. Nobody will want to leave the house where they have lived for most of their lives.
Persistence Is The Key
They may have had all kinds of negative ideas about the house inside their heads, but Carla and Gladys were set on selling the house for its ideal location. They thought that it should not be too hard to find buyers who would be willing to put in the effort to remodel the house after closing the deal. Even if the home turned out to be quite a mess full of trinkets and junk, the realtors were quite sure that it was worth it.
Taking A Peek Inside
Carla and Gladys were having a hard time but they knew that it was really important to go to the house and take a look before anything else. The negotiations were ongoing, but the sisters needed to see for themselves what the home looked like from the inside before they could start offering it to buyers. They had located the property using the address Joyce provided them and they have seen a photo of the exterior of the house. After some persuasion, Joyce eventually agreed to a visit.
Much Better Than Expected
The property is a hidden gem in Toronto’s Old Mill neighborhood and flippers Gladys and Carla Spizzirri managed to get hold of it. The pair is successful at renovating houses, which are later sold for a good price. However, the sisters were still not sure of how well Joyce’s home would do in the market. They did not expect to discover a treasure trove of various historical artifacts that would sell for more than their expectations. They were totally shocked to find a historic and beautiful home when they imagined a messy and dilapidated house.
Preservation of History
It is undeniable that Joyce’s house is a special place – an impressive piece of architecture that deserves a spot in history. We are pretty sure that the new owners, just like everyone who had seen the house, were inspired by how Joyce maintained the home and preserved its minute details. The property was in good hands for 72 years, so hopefully, the next set of people that live there can do what Joyce did. Much to the realtors’ surprise, the home did not need any remodeling or renovation at all as it was in great condition.
Just Like The Brady Bunch
With its antique details and meticulous interior design, the place basically belonged to another era. Gladys Spizzirri once joked about the accents and furniture dating back to The Brady Bunch days. It was definitely an old house, but it seems Joyce made a lot of effort to keep it excellent condition and we bet that her insurance company approves. The house is incredibly gorgeous and you will find it more impressive when you hear about the family is solely responsible for the designs. It is undeniable that this home has been crafted with passion and love.
An Outlet For Her Creativity
Joyce is a busy woman, but she does not forget to take the time to pursue her passions. She worked as a seamstress but when she had free time, she puts in the effort to develop her skills in interior design, where she seems to have poured in her excess creativity. We certainly find her designs very impressive. Back then, the family was suffering from the war economy, yet this did not stop Joyce from doing the things that she enjoys doing.
When the sisters got to 148 Jane Street, they noticed that the house looked like it did in the picture that Jane sent them. It looked like the other houses nearby, which means it looked standard and completely normal. However, they were pleased to find that the house did not look neglected despite the fact that it had stood there for over seven decades. They then entered the house, preparing themselves for the worst. However, the moment they stepped inside it, they discovered something they had not expected. It looked like a regular home, but it possessed secrets which completely caught them by surprise.
A Secret No More
Like what we mentioned earlier, you should not judge a book by its cover! Joyce’s house was basically a massive time capsule and she could have gained fame for it, but it was only on the news when she made a decision to put the house on the market and live in a retirement home. The elderly woman may not have been a professional interior designer, but it was clear that she had skills. We bet she could have earned a lot of money with her impressive talent. The cat is now out of the bag, and the world has finally discovered how an amazing designer she is.
Success With Negotiations
Before the real estate sisters could get things in order, they had to see the place first. After much negotiation with the elderly woman, the pair managed to convince her to continue with the sale. When everything was on track, they scheduled a visit to the place. They were worried that they might be going to a dump. Let us just say the pair could not believe their eyes when they finally stepped inside the house.
A Brick House
Since then, a lot of interior designers from all around the country have visited the brick house to see what Joyce had done with it. They were immediately noticed that the elderly woman did not use bright colors and chose tone on tone. In addition, the house was full of metallic wallpaper and gold furnish but her love of floral patterns was apparent as well. The home must have looked different when Joyce first started living there. She moved in with her family when she was 24 years old.
A Hidden Gem
Considering how amazing the house was, you might have thought it would be some kind of a tourist destination, but the reality is that nobody knew what was waiting inside the brick house. Although Joyce is not popular as a designer, she could have pursued a career in interior design if she wanted to. After she decided to put her home on the market and move out, it became viral instantly! These days, everyone in the neighborhood has heard of the house and its interior perfection.
A Thorough Investigation
Gladys and Carla were pleased that the property was not only prime real estate but also had gorgeous interiors. However, they still needed to do a more thorough investigation. They were glad that from the outside, the home looked perfectly fine, but the moment that they stepped in, they were completely shocked by how beautiful it was. In spite of this, they had to check for any damage and structural faults since it was an old house.
It is often better if a house is being sold fully furnished because that means it is ready for occupancy when someone buys it. In this respect, selling Joyce’s house came with a bit of a disadvantage for the buyer. True enough, everybody was astonished by the home boasting of well-preserved and gorgeous interiors with incredible pieces dating way back to the 1940s. However, the furniture pieces are not included in the sale of the home, so the new owners will have to bring in replacements.
Things Worth Keeping
We understand why Joyce wanted to keep her furniture and it was a good thing that her daughter inherited the beautiful pieces. It makes sense that Joyce prefers this arrangement because she is probably more comfortable with the idea of her child taking good care of the items. After all, most of them are well-preserved and tasteful antiques. All things considered, Joyce probably just wanted to sell the house, but not the items in it. However, we bet moving out of a very beautiful place will not be easy.
Honing Her Talents
Joyce’s two-story home served as an outlet for her creativity. It was hers to design any way that she wanted to. She put a lot of effort into turning the modest abode into a place that is like a luxury hotel. She used her creativity and resourcefulness to succeed in the endeavor and her house soon turned into a prized treasure. Her talent for design made everything possible.
Throwback To The ’50s
Joyce was lucky that her whole family helped her beautify their abode and transform it into what it is now. However, the fact remains that Joyce was the house’s creative director and she chose the furniture and practically everything else, from the curtains to the sheets. They had more freedom after the Second World War ended and the economy improved. It became more popular to decorate homes with the styles that were popular in the ’50s.
In those days, there was an obsession with bright colors and many people started decorating their homes using loud tones of green, yellow, and red. Even small houses were decorated with bright colors, which was attributed to people looking forward to a brighter future after the war. Nevertheless, there were still people who went for soft pastel colors instead. You can just imagine how colorful everything must have been in those days with vivid and pastel colors.
Joyce was very much inspired moving to Bloor West Village and she transformed the humble house. In fact, the house was like a portal to the 1950s since the appliances, furniture pieces, colors, and home decors were kept the same. However, another unique thing about the elderly woman was her ability to make her house look like it didn’t age a single day. This was the reason why everything seemed preserved and even brand new. Joyce was very particular about preserving the place.
The place is definitely impressive, but you should also consider the things that are not visible to the untrained eye. When purchasing a house, you should not forget to check for water leaks, electrical faults, and heating repairs. These things can only be discovered after careful damage inspection. The realtors felt nervous about possible structural damage but they hoped for the best.
When Joyce was interviewed, she explained that she likes matching things and soft colors. She also said that she prefers tone on tone over bright colors. If you look at her paints, wallpapers, furniture pieces, home decorations, and mattresses, you will notice she used aqua, pastel pink, purple, and sea foam. Joyce prefers colors that are easy on the eyes and soft colors like these definitely matched with the bright windows, giving the space a calming effect.
Joyce was able to keep the house in pristine condition even the smallest detail. While it might have been quite an investment in those days, it is clear that her hard work has paid off. People have seen the fruit of Joyce’s labor and we hope the new owners decide to keep the home the same way.
The moment Gladys and Carla stepped inside the home, all their fears and worries dissolved right away. First of all, the house was absolutely pristine and it seemed like they were transported to the ’40s. the real estate sisters have seen a lot of properties throughout their careers but never anything as spectacular as Joyce’s home.
Stunned Into Speechlessness
As Joyce toured the duo around her home, the realtors fell in love with everything that they saw. We are pretty sure you would have the same reaction if you saw the home décor and amazing possessions for yourself. However, the more that the pair saw, the more that they started to worry about something else. There was an issue that might affect the sale of the house.
Gladys and Carla admired the house, but there was no denying it was not for everyone. To say the least, the home was an acquired taste. There would be prospective buyers who would not be too fond of the soft pastels and the pinks in the house. The house was rather feminine, something that might be a problem in the market.
